I have stuff to tell about Sydney and Melbourne

I just cbf right now

current news is that me, Kristian, Sajid and Luke are probably going to move in together, but the house we were going to move into is no longer available. So now we're house hunting. Should be interesting living with three guys, especially being non-family type.

Hmmn.

well this fucking sucks.

The light fuse has blown in my house. This has resulted in no lights in the entire household, but all the power is running. Thankfully light fuse is separate from everything else.

However, this means that I am sitting in semi-darkness, save for the light from my laptop, and from three lamps that I have managed to salvage from within the household. It goes alright, except that I was planning to clean most of the house tonight. So I will have to take my lamps with me as I move from room to room. Awesome.

Also, I've become intensely paranoid that someone has cut the lights so that they can kill the household residents i.e. me, because I'm the only person home. I keep jumping at every noise. Like my cat was locked inside my sister's work room so instead of meowing like normal cats, she kept banging herself into the door which scared the living shit out of me. I should really put on some music. But then I'm scared that the music will cover up anyone sneaking behind me with like an axe.

Good times.

Oh, so field trip was fun. Didn't see any spiders, thank God. Minus a few rubber ones, which I still screamed at even though I knew they weren't alive. I suck. But the burrows are really fucking cool once you know how to find them.

That's the burrow of one of the trapdoor species we looked at, Gaias somethingorother. The lid is about 50mm across. It's been shown that burrow lid size has like a 0.9 correlation with spider age, so it's a big old spider. And because it's so big it was probably a female. Neat.

This is the same burrow only with the lid open. The leaves and stems are arranged around the base of the lid that way so that ants and other insects and ---AGH RANDOM THUMPING NOISE-- and, uh, stuff can crawl up towards the burrow and the spider just drags them inside. Neat! So the longer the stems, the greater the foraging range. Also you can tell it's a Gaias and not one of the other species we looked at, Idiosoma nigrum, because of the way the stems are arranged. We also looked at tree-stem trapdoor spiders! Instead of being in the ground, tree-stems obviously make their burrow against the stem of a tree (usually casuarinas, but we found some against mallee trees). We actually found a couple tree-stems outside their normal habitat, and a couple of burrows that had actually outlived the tree so it stood alone and in the open.

Okay, so I'm pretty sure I heard footsteps. Curse my overactive imagination. I have to turn music on now before I go crazy.

If I don't survive the night, know that I died wearing blue chenille bed socks.

edit: lol police sirens. Nice...

whee

so for one of my Wildlife units next semester (yes, first semester exams not even over yet and already thinking about next semester) I'm meant to do a couple of days prac work so I can eventually write a report

got an email with a possible oppurtunity for said work, which involves two days in Dowerin identifying threatened Minnivale trapdoor spiders. This is highly convenient given that I don't actually have to look for work to do, but here I face two problems:

1. No car to get to Dowerin. And even so, intense fear of driving will ensue. I'M AN ASIAN FEMALE. I KNOW THE DANGERS.

2. I find spiders highly unnerving. Especially the big hairy kind which, funnily enough, aptly describes the Minnivale trapdoor spider.

Fieldwork will involve not just identifying them, but LOOKING FOR THEM IN THEIR BURROWS. Followed by trapping and handling them I assume. God, this would be so convenient otherwise. I have only fear (and a car) holding me back. Maybe this is the time to face my fears.

OH MY GOD I JUST LOOKED UP MINNIVALE TRAPDOOR SPIDERS ON GOOGLE IMAGES AND NOW I'VE SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF MYSELF

see, the tricky thing about Double Decker Yogos

is that the best part, the white fluffy marshmallow part, is on the top; and the not-so-great-but-still-good part, the chocolate part, is on the bottom

the trick is to scrape the chocolate part out of the bottom of the tub with maximum efficiency, minimising the amout of white fluffy marshmallow part taken from the top, so you can eat it last.

Guess what I'm eating guys.

OH I started an assignment THREE WEEKS BEFORE it is due! I am so productive. Productive, that's me. What's that Kim? You have been wasting time on the interbutts since 9am this morning? You haven't been to a biometrics lecture or lab for the past two weeks? No, shut up, I am productive.

By the way, The Dillinger Escape Plan was amazing, and now I am in love with both Gil Sharone and Gregory Puciato.

The Yogo has gone.

In Clothespeg. Improved my week somewhat. Now for someone to buy my print so I can make teh monies....

Sophie and I are going to start a band.

Apparently I will be drummer, despite never touching drums in my life. This is okay. Also, Soph describes her guitar ability as "enthusiastic, but without much skill". So far there's just the two of us, although we might have a frontman by the end of the week.

Man, I'm actually really excited about being in a band.

I'm hoping by the end of next week my stress levels will lower significantly, otherwise I may have to look into mass homicide.

today I saw a friend who I haven't seen since before she cheated on her then-boyfriend while they were on holiday together in New Zealand, of whom I am now working on a webcomic with.

since I last saw her she's shaved her head and her clothes are less long flowy and hippy-ish, and more miniskirt arm-sleevey punk-ish. Think Rikku of FFX, but with a shaved head.

hey Shamini, she said she'll be at the tav again next Thursday as well if you wanted to come hang out with us.

This morning I had a really trippy dream

I don't remember much of it, something about trying to reach through a fence, and there were cats? Maybe dogs. Anyway.

I think there ended up being something bad on the other side of the fence or something, anyway, the dream took on a kinda nightmare-ish quality

I was drifting in that half-sleep half-wake area of consciousness where I was half stuck in the nightmare, half aware I was whimpering out loud

I woke up to my cat Bob prodding me with her paw, like she was patting me reassuringly, or trying to get me to wake up? Then she kinda padded around on my bed a bit, then ran out the door.

Fucking weird man.

so I hate my entry for the Clothespeg thingy.

well, not hate. I actually kinda like it. But like, I decided to go all digital, as scanner has decided to be a poo, plus it has to be really high resolution (300 dpi).

so I started on this elaborate fantasy type portrait, all lineless and semi-realistic and junk, and even though I liked it, wasn't satisfied with it. And I'm all like "what the shit Kim it looks good, why do you have be an angry asstard all the time"

but it doesn't look like something characteristic of my 'style', or whatever. Like all the fun bits have been replaced by all these fancy pretty bits and it's not as enjoyable. So now I've decided to start again, and do my usual thing of scanning lineart in to colour on Photoshop and blahblah. I might finish the one I started, who knows.

Now all I need is a scanner that works! :0

sup y'all,

Unwrapped = success. Sold $95 worth of jewellry. Promptly spent it on food and shiny things. :]

Finished the fifth Obernewton book. Expectantly waiting for the sixth and final book... due out in 2010. Sigh.

Working on my entry for the Clothespeg Project art exhibition... have a feeling I'm going to hate it, but oh well. That's if I even finish it...

I have two big assignments for my Saving Endangered Species unit, an assignment for Biometrics 2, and a research project type thing for Conservation Biology and Restoration Ecology. Assessing the impact of dust deposition on rare and common plant species.

In effect, I will be spending the next 7-9 weeks applying dust on plants and seeing if it affects their growth. Good times.

Hmn... also, my mother is coming tonight for Easter. This will be my first Easter away from my hometown. I might try and sell some of my jewellry.

Also the Clothespeg Project is coming along again, I'm gonna try and get a good entry done this time and get in (maybe)

I have tons of pics I need to get coloured, including something nice for Ursula's birthday next week. I totally remembered like a month ago. Go team Kim. Now I just need to find a scanner :/

Ben and I are working on our webcomic. Well trying to. As in I message him, and sometimes I get replies. Sometimes I get messages out of the blue that have nothing to do with anything. So in reality we're not doing anything at all. Hehe.

As for uni. BLAHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Well, it's not so bad. My timetable is pretty rad, I only have two exams this semester. Just crappy research assignments and lab reports and blah and poo.

I can't be bothered typing anymore :)

hi all,

I've been meaning to LJ my adventures down south, but I haven't had time. As most of you know I've been busy moving house and stuff. At the moment I only have internet access at my old house, so I really only have time to check a few things while I'm packing stuff and so forth.

I just found out that a friend of mine from uni has just been admitted to hospital for an eating disorder. I'm relieved somewhat, but also kinda scared for her. Going through last year watching her just... deteriorate, it was one of the scariest and saddest things to witness. Especially feeling unable to help her, I don't know her all that well so it felt weird to intervene, yanno? Not knowing her parents or her highschool friends made it hard to contact someone that would get her the help that she needed.... I dunno.

I just hope she finds her way through this.

Big Day Out is tomorrow. Very exciting. But only half as exciting as going down south for possum tagging on Monday! I will be gone from the 4th until the 22nd. Perhaps with brief updates in between.

House de-warming/demolition party seems to be set for the 29th of Feb, so I'll keep the appropriate parties posted on that one. Unfortunately this means sacrificing Okkervil River-ness D:

But hopefully by the time I get back we will be partly if not completely moved into my new house by then! Sacrificing more internets time. But such is life.

Oh, and I managed to get the second volume of Runaways! OMGOMGOMG. KAROLINA AND XAVIN = SO MUCH HEARTS. Even if Eliese ruined it for me by confirming my suspicions. Ass.

HAHA MOLLY IS WIN.

I wish comics were real. ;;

Kim vs. Centrelink I

So basically the saga begins such like this:

1. Kim reports to Centrelink that she plans to be studying full-time during 2008 (al beit a tad late).

2. Centrelink retaliates by sending a notice two weeks later that 'because Kim is no longer a full-time student, she is now registered as looking for full-time work'.

3. Kim exclaims "WTF" and goes to deal with this horrid business.

4. Centrelink hands Kim a form to fill. Kim fills out form. Centrelink then gives two more forms for Kim to fill out, which she must return within 14 days. Kim exits Centrelink building.

5. Kim receives phone call from her mother later that week, informing her that she has an appointment with 'Job Network' to 'learn how to look for a full-time job'. This is despite ALREADY BEING EMPLOYED, AS WELL AS INTENTIONS OF STUDYING FULL TIME. Kim MUST attend appointment thingy, or it goes on her record. Kim exclaims, perhaps for the billionth time, "WTF". And proceeds to be on the verge of nervous breakdown.

6. Kim returns within allotted time frame with the two forms filled out. Kim is given one last form to hand in, and is told the transfer from 'Job Seeker' to 'Student' could take up to 14 days, and during that time she will have to attend crappy meeting things, as well as look for full-time work in between, oh, say, her actual job, and perhaps even her uni studies if this goes on for much longer. Kim exits Centrelink building.

Kim wonders, "WHAT THE SHIT, SHOULDN'T THIS KIND OF CRAP BE ILLEGAL?!"

The saga continues.

Howlin' Novacaines, Sugar Army, all those random bands they get at Amps on a Friday night before 12. Probably a good thing I don't include them I suppose. And I swear to God September was a huge month for me... maybe it was birthdays, not gigs.

Also, I realise I see Little Birdy a lot. Shut up.

I would finally like to note here that not once, despite attempting to 3 times at least, did I see New Rules for Boats. This includes reasons such as overnight camps with possums, exams, and getting hit by taxis. Awesome.

epic rant of emo proportions

this year my festive season constists of work, driving up to my folks' on Christmas eve (after work- sometime after 6pm), Christmas at home, driving back down on Boxing Day for work on the 27th

and the 28th

and the 29th

etc. etc. etc.

I'm getting really sick of the place, not just the day-to-day bullshit of dealing with ass-face customers and tolerating crappy day-time radio for extended periods of time... but I'm sick of working with relatives, to the point that I resent their presence (well, more than I did before anyway). They think because I'm related to them that it's okay to give me shit for everything, even the things I had nothing to do with.

They also think because their side of the family is more well off that they're better than our side of the family. My boss, Kelly and I were talking about how I was going to get home for Christmas, and I mentioned how I wasn't sure how me and my siblings were getting there because we weren't sure if Tam's car would be serviced in time, etc.

Afterwards Kelly tells me that after I'd walked away my boss, who is also my cousin, was going on about how our sides of the family were so "different", because their side was so hard-working while our side was so lazy and unsuccessful. Apparently this stemmed from the aforementioned car problem discussion. Somehow.

This shat me right off, because if she thinks her side of the family is more hard working, she can fuck off and die. How dare she call me and my family, HER family, lazy. I worked 52.5 hours for that ungrateful slut the other week. That's 11 days in a row straight. My parents are market gardeners. My dad pretty much single-handedly overlooks 20 acres of land. My mum does all the business and financial dealings, does all the deliveries, basically all the stuff my dad doesn't do. As far as I know they get up at 6 in the morning and work right up through until 12 at night... sometimes up until 1-2am. Every fucking day of the mother fucking week.

And as for us kids... well, we don't make as much money, but if 'success' was driven purely by how much money you earned, well fuck being successful. All my cousins own bakeries. That's all they do. How is that successful? How is being able to count the number of friends you have on one hand a success? How is being an arrogant, manipulative, two-faced bitch fucking successful?

Get fucked.

I'm giving them a month, then I'm gone.

Kim's life currently = A+

brief recap of the last 8 days or so:

Saturday 8th- Frenzal Rhomb at Capitol. Was crazy good... we were upstairs watching everyone downstairs trying to kill each other. Was amusing, somewhat.

Monday 10th- Tegan and Sara at Metro Freo. Was amazing. May possibly be in love with them now, although possibly Tegan more. Got a photo with Kaki King, the support act.

Tuesday 11th- went to The Moon with Hannah, Lou, Pez, Kate, Shard and David for $3 wine and cheap pizza night. Ate way too much pizza. Was awesome.

Friday 14th- Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake and Streetlight Manifesto at Metro City. Pretty much the best night I've had in ages (ie. since Monday). Got blisters on the feet. Highlight was screaming along to 'Another F.U Song' with Roger, who plays bass for LTJ.

Saturday 15th- Christmassy barbeque with Kelly, Ali, Rach, Hannah, Courtney and Julia. Was quite lovely. After that I went to Shape with Shard to help sell Van She merch. Because there was no room upstairs where the bands were playing to sell merch, we had to be downstairs... and thus was highly unsuccessful, what with music downstairs having nothing to do with what was going on downstairs. He bet me that we wouldn't sell any shirts, I said we'd sell one. Just as we were packing up someone came and bought a shirt. Thus Shard is officially a loser, and some stranger with a Van She shirt is officially my hero.

Oh, and the two guys behind Daft Punk happened to be there that night. Awesome.

Sunday 16th- Daft Punk, Cut Copy, Presets, Van She at The Esplanade. Got on the door. $130 gig for free, heck yes! Had an absolute blast. Best week ever. Except for the 'clocking an average of four hours sleep a night' part.

Tomorrow I'm going to The Moon with Marty for an epic battle of the wits (ie. $3 wine and Scrabble).

now that I have finished exams I am excited for summer!

Can't wait to go home (for once)! The beaches aren't as crowded, the food is free, and will be driving up with a few friends from uni. Whoo!

Plus I miss my mum and dad, whee

Also, possum tagging! Awesome!

I hope to be more productive and get lots of arts done. And work on jewellry. And work on printing tee-shirts! Yes!

Exclamation mark!

Oh, and my weekend was neat. Saw Muse and Bad Religion. Was rad!

okay, I'm done.

Harry Waring Marsupial Reserve

sooo my Saturday was occupied by a lovely 12 hour field trip, from noon until midnight... which stuffed up a lot of plans for my weekend, but better this weekend than next I suppose.

anyhoo, first exercise we did was 'bird' watching... basically Dale (lecturer) set up these coloured plastic containers- red, blue (some were clear, but the same size as blue ones and thus counted as blue ones... it was meant to represent dimorphism in animals), yellow, and some clear ones- along a 600m path and we were meant to mark down how many we saw as we walked down. We weren't meant to leave the path, or communicate with anyone, and none of the containers were more than 15m away from the path. Basically it was meant to test our observation skills.

I got 18/20 blue, 14/20 red, 0/10 of the yellow, and 5/10 of the clear ones. Ehehe.

The next part was actually looking for birds in pairs. Mel and I wandered around for a bit- I recognised some wattle birds (the ones that make a 'pew! pew!' noise that sounds like a ray gun), and ravens, and honeyeaters and crap like that. I'm not really a bird person, but whatever.

Third part was with Jane Prince setting up invertebrate pit traps, which was easy because we've done it like a billion times. But insects. Meh.

Then the fun part was starting up the vertebrate trapping with Harriet. Basically we tested two types of baits, so some of the traps were set with universal bait (sardines, rolled oats, peanut butter), and other traps with universal bait mixed in with aniseed.

After we set traps we had dinner, and there's this tame-ish kind of possum around the house part of the reserve that hung around for some barbeque. It climbed up my leg and sat on my shoulder. :D

Then I realised it was probably carrying diseases (many of the marsupials are said to carry salmonella), so I decided the possum-on-my-shoulder thing wasn't cool anymore.

Anyway, by the time we went out to check traps it was obviously nightfall (being that brushtail possums only come out at night), so it was dark and scary and I discovered that my sense of direction isn't as good as I thought it was. But whatever.

Basically we spent the next hour checking our traps to see if we caught anything. If we did, we had to kind of shoo them into a denim bag so we could see if it had ID tags on its ears, tag them if they didn't or write down their tag ID if they did, write down what sex it was, and if it was female check if they were carrying any young. Harriet did a demo thing when we found a quenda (Southern Brown bandicoot). Unfortunately, it was a female carrying three young. When you get a female you're meant to tape up the pouch so that the young can't be left behind, as marsupials are prone to ejecting their young from the pouch when escaping from predators, as a defense mechanism. In theory the female can pull the tape off later when they groom themselves.

Well, Harriet accidently let the quenda escape, and she left behind one of her young. So some people had to take the one left behind to a caretaker. Luckily it was only a week or two from becoming independant anyway.

Of all the traps, our grid caught the most I think. We checked the traps twice. The first time we got five bandicoots and two possums. The second time we got like two bandicoots and one possum. Both times we got at least one female where it seemed too risky to try and tape up the pouch, so what we did was keep them in the bag, then leave them in the bag so that they could crawl out at their own accord so that they'd take their babies with them.

We finished early so I managed to be home by 11:30 smelling like sunscreen and insect repellant and bait.

Probably one of the better field trips I've had, but I know there's going to be lots of data analysis in the upcoming weeks. Sigh.

ummm well let's see

this past week I've been at uni for around 8 hours everyday

I spent six hours in the Botany Annexe on Wednesday typing up a lab report... so I went a bit crazy by the end of it

Thursday I went and saw Little Birdy at Amplifier Bar, which was really good... um, yeah cbf really saying much

Saturday went to see Abbe May <3. Hannah and I went to get setlists but alas, there were none. Anyway, we talked to Doug afterwards (the guitarist I think... dating LB's like tour manager type person), and he gave us demo CDs, which was pretty neat.

Thennn Sunday went and saw Little Birdy again at Newport, and it was quite good again. The venue wasn't so great space-wise, was smushed into the front. The sound was better but, and they managed to get through all their encores this time. Also it was Katy's birthday. Wheeee

anyway, going to Mandurah today, shall be back on Wednesday. Yay!
